You can bake potatoes in a conventional oven, or in a microwave oven. Discuss how they differ.? You can bake potatoes in a conventional oven, or in a microwave oven. Baking potatoes in the oven takes "40 minutes to an hour, depending on their size" in a 425o F oven, while in a microwave, the length of time to cook depends on how many potatoes you are trying to cook: 4 minutes for one, 8 minutes for 2, ... , a half-hour for 8. The two ways to cook a potato differ in many ways: please discuss how these differences give rise to the different instructions for the use of an oven and a microwave oven.

conventional about 45 seconds"
P*Kitty replied: "i prefer the regular oven as opposed to the microwave for baked potatoes however, I would put the potato in the microwave for 5-7 minutes prior to putting it in the oven just to lessen the time in the oven...when you cook them in the microwave the skin tends to get hard and I prefer to eat the skin off of my potatoes"
Bliss in Ignorance replied: "In the microwave oven, they always seem to come out rock hard. The taste seems a bit off, too. <--- From experience :P"
tucksie replied: "You can't bake a potato in a microwave. The difference between a microwaved one and an oven baked one is in the skin. Baked, crispy, microwaved, soft and chewy."
american native replied: "in the oven it taste better the skin is nice and crisp. but in the microwave the skin is like rubber. ewh!"
Matt D replied: "Potatoes don't bake in a micowave onion. They are essentially boiled due to the microwave heating.
Micorwaves cook everything essentially by heating the moisture in the food.
The difference between oven and microwave is the oven really bakes and provides a crispy skin and better flavor.
Microwave takes 10-12 minutes for one med size potato
Conv oven 1 hr at 450 deg F for med sized potato"
Scott W replied: "In a conventional oven, the heat is applied to the outside of the potato and slowly makes the molecules vibrate faster as the temperature rises. The outside is always hotter as the heat is being conducted from the outside towards the middle.
In a microware oven, the microwave energy causes all the molecules to begin to vibrate at approx the same time. The heat does not move from the outside inwards as it does in baking, but the temperature of the entire potato rises at approx the same time and rate.
Since it takes longer for the heat to travel from the outside of the potato to the middle (so it's cooked all the way through) than it does for the microwave energy to get the molecules vibrating at the same speed, the two types of ovens cook at different speeds and so the instructions are different for the microwave and conventional oven.
And everyone who answered is correct in my opinion, the potato baked in a hot oven is much better. The skin is crispy and the inside drier and mealy in comparison to the microwaved potato."
minibob007@sbcglobal.net replied: "the oven takes longer and taste better. the microwave takes shorter time and makes the potatoes taste like crap."
Is it worth sending microwave to get fixed after putting 2 much weight on turntable? I put about 5 big potatoes to make baked potatoes...I think it was too much weight. It didn't work after that. It makes a clicking sound & that's it. It's a Kenmore about 8 yrs. old.
missy1234 replied: "No way, after parts and labor you'd be much better off buying a new one. They are relatively cheap these days."
Herrmann replied: "I agree with Missy that at 8 years old, it would not be worth the repair costs. Also, 5 potatoes should not have been too much weight."
How to fix a good loaded baked potato? I want to put cheese, sour cream, and bacon bits on my potato, but do I heat it all together or do I do the potato first and add the stuff to it? I have that potato that you just put in the microwave for 2 mins.

Take them out and put like 1 piece of bacon (cut in half) on each potato. Baked them in the over at 375 degrees for like 40 mins. When they are done take them out of the over to sit for a minute. Break up the bacon in little pieces and then add cheese put them in the still warm oven for liek 2 mins and then take out. Add the sour cream and other stuff like brocolli and or chives."
In the Kitchen replied: "Loaded Potato Skins:
8 servings
4 large potatoes, washed
4 tablespoons olive oil
4 tablespoons thinly sliced scallions
8 tablespoons Cheddar and/or Monterey Jack cheese
4 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled
16 ounces sour cream
Salt
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Pierce potatoes with a knife and bake 45 minutes, or until tender. Cool.
Cut potatoes in half lengthwise and scoop potato out, leaving a 1/4" of potato on the skin.
Halve potatoes again then brush the inside of the potatoes with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Place under broiler for about 5 minutes or until light brown.
Fill skins with cheese, scallions and bacon. Broil until cheese melts and serve with sour cream."
whiskeyflirt replied: "cook your potato, then when it comes out cut a small slit in it and squish both ends together this makes the inside comeout and allows your butter to seep into the potato then if you want your cheese melted add it and zap 'er back into the microwave. then add the rest of your toppings...enjoy!"
gabbee55 replied: "If you are only cooking the potato for 2 min, I would probably put the cheese on it first, then put the other goodies on it when it is done. Man that sounds good, I think I may have to go throw me one in the micro right now!"

Ladies... any suggestions on easy to fix, yet healthy meals? I am 36 1/2 weeks right now and I am having a really hard time cooking dinner, because it just hurts to stand and walk around the small space that is my kitchen! I am currently eating a microwaved baked potato and my husband is eating pizza rolls! LOL He works all day AND can't cook... especially not healthy foods. Any suggestions? Other than telling me to have someone else do it for me.......

If you have a big enough pot you could get away with cooking every 2-3 days. Once the baby comes just keep it up, you'll be glad for the low fuss meals. With the cooler weather its just the perfect time of year. When you're up to it add a salad or fruit for desert.
Hope that helps, and Happy Holidays!!"

or, green giant makes single servings of vegetables like corn, broccoli and broccoli and cheese that are microwaveable and there are those "steamers" bags of preseasoned veggies that you microwave in the bag. pair that with a chicken or other meat from your grocery store's deli or maybe some salisberry steaks or roast turkey from the freezer section. microwavable, quick and still pretty healthy.
or you can buy some whole wheat sub rolls, ham and turkey, and two of your favorite kinds of presliced cheeses and some of the lettuce shreds and maybe some spicy or honey mustard and serve sub sandwiches with celery sticks and baby carrots. (ready to eat in the produce department) or a veggie tray from the produce department.
and you can stretch the lunch meat and veggie tray out for another meal if you pick up some presliced apples (or a bag of whole) and some cheese cubes and toothpicks. get a tray from the kitchen, sit on the couch and wrap ham and turkey around cheese cubes and stick a toothpick through it. serve this with the remaining veggies and apples for dessert. very healthy and so easy you don't even have to do it in the kitchen!

so later today I am going to bake potatoes.? Ive bought some potatoes
Ive read some articles/comments on:
Microwave vs Oven
I probably will go with the oven.
I was told 400 degrees for 45mins-1hour
However I have few questions, please answer in same format as the questions asked.
1) Do I have to cover the potatoes in a foil even though Im putting it in the oven?
2) When pricking your potatoes, are you just saying make bunch of holes all over? (sorry I am new to this)
thanks, easy 10 pts.
cheers
oops yea I meant 400 F
oh by the way, do you have to flip the potato?
aussiechic94 replied: "haha thats so cute lol. ok well first the foil is just to keep the heat in so it doesnt matter if you do or not.
and just stab the potato witha fork a few times.
and are u sure about 400? unless ur talking in F but it should be around 180 C
hope that helped and i hope they taste yummy =]"
Amy1982 replied: "Hello, cover them in foil for the first 30 minutes to keep them big, then for the last 20 minutes take the foil off so the skin can crisp up.
Also with the pricking of the skin, get a fork and stab it into the potato a few times. This is to stop it exploding in your oven.
I hope this helps."
Loui replied: "Yes cover with foil but at the last 10 minutes take the foil off so that the skin becomes nice and crunchy.
but for best result after cooking in the oven for an hour i would microwave it for 8 minutes to make sure the inside is soft.
Just get a fork and stab it around 6 times all over."
suzanne s replied: "HI YOU NEED TO COVER TH POTATOES IN FOIL SO THAT THE MOISTURE REMAINS LOCKED WHILE THE POTATOES ROAST.
POTATOES NEED TO BE PRICKED WITH A FORK OR WITH THE TIP OF A KNIFE BECAUSE THE SKIN MAY BURST WHILE ROASTING AND PRICKING THE POTATO AVIODS THIS FROM HAPPENING."
Benna L replied: "for the covering the potato i think it no need.for question 2 i think it not makeing hole all over"
ColdBlue replied: "this is "THE METHOD"
Dont prick your potato.. it WONT blow up.
A microwave cooks from the inside out an oven cooks from the outside in.
So here is the trick.
Microwave your potatoes for around 6 minutes.
Preheat oven to max
when the potatoes have pinged take them out (with gloves - wil be really hot) stick a knife in to see if they are soft.. if not p[ping for 2 more minutes.
they will look a bit wrinkled and not tasty at this point.. stick with it.
rub them with olive or sunflower oil and salt.
in the oven till the outside is brown and proper crispy. dont use foil. you can turn it but if its in the middle on a rack not a tray it will be fine ( 180oC)
after split them add butter salt pepper and sour cream - top with cheesy baked beans!"
konish59 replied: "i would cook them at 180 to 200 degrees. you don't have to use foil it's just personal taste. i like mine crispy so i don't bother. just a few pricks with a fork will do. you can start them off in the microwave & just finish them in the oven if you're short of time. i also rub them with a bit of vegetable/sunflower/olive oil to make the skin extra crispy & then i eat the skin-it's full of vitamins & minerals. you don't HAVE to flip them, but it's a good idea halfway through-they normally take about an hour-depends on the size of the potato. it's cooked when your knife goes in easy"
Nunya Bidness replied: "400 degree for 45 minutes is fine, or 375 for a hour, squeeze them to be sure they are soft.
I usually wrap them in foil, don't like a crunchy skin. Pierce the potatoes, rub with butter or margarine cover with foil. Bake
I usually bake a few extras, already have the oven on, so why not take advantage of it! - Cool completely (in the foil) and refrigerate. Then you can use them to make homemade hash browns (grate, add salt/pepper and some grated onion and brown) OR cut them up and make fried potatoes.
No you don't need to flip the potato, put it in the middle of the oven toward the back. IF you are cooking something else or roasting meat at the same time, put them on another rack or along side the pan.
Enjoy"
riversconfluence replied: "Potato prep: scrub it with a vegetable brush under running water. Remove any growths.Don't dig down into the potatoes and expose the white part, with any of the cooking methods, that part will be dry, and it will stick to the foil.
For a baked potato, rub a tiny bit of oil over the potato, and put it in the oven.
for a steamed potato, just wrap it in foil. Just enough foil to gift wrap the potato, you don't want a bunch f foil, that would interfere with cooking. Then just put it in the oven.
Put either kind just on the rack in your oven, no bowls or cookie sheets. No flipping needed, since it is on the rack, and the heat can get to the entire potato.
Your times and oven temp are correct, the potato is done when you squeeze it a bit [potholder required] and it gives.
I don't care for microwaved potatoes, but yes, you take a fork and prick them in several spots to let the steam out [or else, kaboom!]
I prefer the foil wrapped potato, it comes out steaming and moist and pretty. All ready for the butter and sour cream and bacon and onion and cheese and mushrooms and taco sauce and..."
H-man replied: "I was told 400 degrees for 45mins-1hour
Answer Too hot.....medium oven 180C, timing correct. Bake on the oven rack in the middle of the oven.
1) No foil is necessary, it is only used to save making a mess. Use a pan underneath. Arrange your racks before preheating oven,
2) I use a regular fork and put two to three rows down the two flatter sides. That helps the spud let the steam escape to make them fluffier.
Check the type of spud you are using as they change throughout the season.
At the moment our multi purpose red is a 'van Rosa', weeks ago they were Desiree.

Do i need to lose weight? Im 13 years old almost turning 14 in a couple months and im 5'5 and i weigh 130 pounds. Am i fat? should i lose some more weight? im only eating milk, a lot of fruits, vegetables espesially baked potatoes in the microwave , water, yogurt, whole wheat bread, oatmeal, cheerios cereal , and tea. When i started the diet i was 138 and now im 130. I started it like 2 weeks ago and i walk 30 min a day . Will only eating these foods stop my growth and development?
i also dont eat anything past 7:00 in the evening is that good for loseing weight?
lonestar replied: "Good for you! The foods you list are all good and it's great that you are walking. You are young so your body will change a lot over the years. You're doing the right things now. Be sure to drink plenty of water too."
hmmm replied: "You are going good sweety. Keep it up. Eating these foods will be good for your health. You will not gain weight, but you will grow & develop better.."
rae replied: "It sounds like you are eating very healthy foods, and exercising an appropriate amount, which is great.I don't think you need to lose any weight. In fact losing too much weight will make you unhealthy especially at your age.Your body is still growing and needs the extra weight.I was around the same height and weight when I was your age. When I got older I naturally lost a few pounds.Keep up your healthy habits and it will benefit you for the rest of your life."
Jojo replied: "Holy Moly Cutie Pie! You're fine. But eating that way will SLOW your metabolism down. Potatoes are a simple carbohydrate and so are your cheerios - the oatmeal is fine - if it's the kind that you have to cook.
When you diet or severly restrict your calories, it sends your body into a sort of survival mode -storing the calories you take in as fat - to get it through the lean time. It doesn' t matter what you eat, even if it's good stuff - like veggies. The body says... Ut oh, I'm in trouble, not enough food, could perish! Then it stores what you eat to get you past the "starvation."
So. What do you eat? Eat almost any fruit or veggie - 'cept potatoes and browning bananas and loads of grapes. Meat is okay if it's not high in fat.
Stay away from food that comes in a box. But if you're eating that stuff look at the labels. If sugar, corn syrup, cane syrup is in the first half dozen ingredients find something else.
If you eat pasta, make sure it's whole grain, same thing with bread. Stuff made with flour should be whole grain if you eat it at all.
You don't need to diet, you need to eat healthy and keep fit.
Look on the internet and find information on Low Glycemic foods and stick to those. They'll maintain your metabolism and help you feel great! You won't feel like you're on a "diet" at all. You'll just be eating foods that are good for you!
Don't worry about your weight. You're perfect!"

what will happen if i start a diet like- ONLY RAW VEGETABLES AND FRUITS+"muscle milk"+calcium and vitamin supplements....
the problem is my skin was really bad, i had a bad breath...
but now it`s like 2 weeks i`ve been on a diet without meat, dairy, gluten...and my skin looks like never before and i got no bad breath anymore....
but yesterday i tried to eat potatoes that i baked in microwave with no salt and i felt i had a constipation....
so i am thinking going on a ONLY RAW FOOD diet...is that ok?
soccergirl1620 replied: "People do it all the time."
sharon h replied: "Educate yourself on sources of complete proteins. Usually some whole grain or legumes are needed to round out a fully vegetarian diet. There are other ways of combining specific food to ensure complete proteins. Your constipation may be related to a drastic decrease in overall calories. This can cause the body to go into starvation mode and slow down digestion to minimize waste."
susandorey replied: "Hey Jason, raw fruits and veggies are great, most of the time you get more out of raw than cooked (there is the odd exception to this) Eating the produce raw you get more benefit from the live plant enzymes which tend to be killed off through cooking.
You will want to educate yourself on where to get your protein, vegetables have some protein, raw nuts are a very good source of protein and I'm not sure if you are allowing eggs, but eggs are a great source of protein as well. (you can have them raw in a smoothy)
For myself I found a raw food diet was a little boring, but if you educate yourself and you enjoy the way you feel, have lots of energy and listen to your body I say go for it."

chocolahoma replied: "Sounds about right, make sure the oven is pretty hot, I'd say 400 degrees (Hotter cooks faster, but thats not necessarily the flavor/effect you're going for.) Last thing you want is a tough potato.
When you press in with your fingers it should give. Need a "hot" over to produce that nutty-tasting, crusty skin you're talking about."
Tony R replied: "You can do them in a Microwave as well, for a large "spud" 5 minutes either side and they are just as good, and if you are doing only one or two you will save a lot on electric and on time as well. PS . you need more time if you put more potatoes, just takes a while to get used to."
lynnguys replied: "350 degrees for about an hour.
Pour a layer of salt (about 2 in. thick) on cookie sheet and put the potato on top of the salt. Make sure you put a slit in the potato, before you cook it. The salt allows the potato to cook all the way through and evenly without drying/burning the bottom."

I use wild bird seed also, but I don't grind it up and make it into balls. I just let the mixture be natural its fun for them to dig around in the bowl and find there faves haha.
My rats LOVE Cheerios by the way"
TessaStarraphobia replied: "I'm not sure about the barley, but everything else is good. I would recommend just keeping everything dry. Adding water to it, cooking it, etc. may just spoil the food. Rats like to chew on things anyway. They LOVE dry, uncooked pasta :) Mine really like the spiral noodles that come in spinach and tomato flavor like these: If you can, find some multi-grain, natural, unsweetened cereals and add that. And you don't really have to feed your rats at any certain time. They should have food available 24/7. They do not eat big meals, they eat tiny bits of food periodically throughout the day and they'll do most of their eating at night."
